Eating trees

While our cattle get most of their diet from grazing grass, clover and herbs they also like to eat, or 'browse', from trees and shrubs. Their choice appears to be oak leaves and willow (the leaves and bark) but they will sample other species when they have access to them. Tree leaves contain important minerals and micro-nutrients and I believe browsing allows ruminants to regulate their metabolism with what they need. This hopefully leads to health and longevity and reduces the need for mineral supplements.

Hedges are, of course, an excellent resource for browsing and the new plantings along the main track at Plaw Hatch are already providing a distraction for the cows when they walk up at milking time.
